work to be done

Haraway (2004b) suggests that there is "specific work to be done if we are to strike up...a conversation with other animals" (p. 141, italics in original).

Some descriptions of how to do that work appear in her text (e.g. understanding ways in which colonizing relations between humans and other animals are maintained), yet I find animal communicator Penelope Smith (2006) provides more specific and direct instructions indicating how one might engage in that interspecies communication. Perhaps this is, at least in part, because Smith does not work within an academic institution.
