Many of the ways of knowing that are encouraged in the reading (and were used in the making) of this 'text' are ancient, and often referred to as spiritual (Conway, 2001; Harner, 1988; Harvey, 2003, 2006a; Montgomery, 2008; Walter & Fridman, 2004). The importance of acknowledging the existence of spirit(s) in the context of academic field work was explicitly written about by anthropologist Turner (1992, 1993/2003).
