Smith (1998) explains that for the Chipewayan with whom he worked, "derived knowledge" (which I also refer to as received knowledge, and is more commonly, in Western contexts, spoken of as intuitive knowledge) is combined with pragmatic everyday knowledge and "comes as a gift from animal persons, most commonly in dreams" (p. 413; see also, Castellano, 2002).
